Selon Joseph Needham, la science de l\u2019ancienne Chine se d\u00e9veloppait de fa\u00e7on continue et stable, tandis qu\u2019en Occident, son d\u00e9veloppement s\u2019effectuait selon un processus discontinu, n\u2019avan\u00e7ant que par bonds au gr\u00e9 des turbulences politiques et religieuses. C\u2019est seulement \u00e0 partir de la Renaissance que l\u2019Occident aurait pris son essor, la Chine ne faisant que stagner en raison de sa propension \u00e0 privil\u00e9gier l\u2019\u00e9tude de l\u2019esprit ou du c\u0153ur humain (<i>Xin<\/i>) et de la nature inn\u00e9e (<i>Xing<\/i>). Depuis lors, l\u2019\u00e9cart n\u2019a cess\u00e9 de se creuser, les derniers si\u00e8cles constituant une p\u00e9riode de phase ascendante qui a permis \u00e0 l\u2019Occident de d\u00e9passer l\u2019Empire du Milieu.<\/p>\n<p>Cette hypoth\u00e8se refl\u00e8te la conception selon laquelle la supr\u00e9matie scientifique de l\u2019Occident ne r\u00e9sulterait pas de sa sp\u00e9cificit\u00e9 sociale et culturelle, mais serait un ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne accidentel ou transitoire. Une telle analyse est certes s\u00e9duisante, mais elle ne correspond qu\u2019\u00e0 un aspect tr\u00e8s partiel de la r\u00e9alit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Comme le fait remarquer le physicien Carlo Rovelli dans un remarquable ouvrage sur la naissance de la pens\u00e9e scientifique<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a>, le monde antique \u00e9tait plein de \u00ab\u00a0Ma\u00eetres\u00a0\u00bb de la pens\u00e9e et de leurs disciples\u00a0: Confucius en Chine, Mo\u00efse au Moyen-Orient, Zoroastre en Perse, Bouddha en Inde, Pythagore dans la Grande Gr\u00e8ce, etc. Mais les disciples, s\u2019ils enrichissaient et approfondissaient la pens\u00e9e de leurs ma\u00eetres, se gardaient bien de mettre en doute leurs affirmations. Par exemple, au sein de l\u2019\u00e9cole pythagoricienne fleurissait une r\u00e9v\u00e9rence totale pour la pens\u00e9e du ma\u00eetre\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0<i>Ipse dixit<\/i>\u00a0\u00bb \u00e9tait leur formule indiquant que si Pythagore avait affirm\u00e9 quelque chose, alors ce devait \u00eatre la v\u00e9rit\u00e9\u00a0!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/luminet\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/12\/anaximandre_rovelli.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[66]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-72\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/luminet\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/12\/anaximandre_rovelli-180x300.jpg\" alt=\"anaximandre_rovelli\" width=\"180\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/luminet\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/12\/anaximandre_rovelli-180x300.jpg 180w, https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/luminet\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/12\/anaximandre_rovelli.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>L\u2019\u00e2pre critique existait tout autant dans le monde antique\u00a0: dans la Bible par exemple, le savoir religieux des Babyloniens \u00e9tait vou\u00e9 aux g\u00e9monies.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019attitude d\u2019un philosophe comme Anaximandre de Milet (V<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle avant J.-C.) a marqu\u00e9 une rupture fondamentale dans l\u2019histoire de la pens\u00e9e scientifique : s\u2019il s\u2019appropria les intuitions majeures de son ma\u00eetre \u00e0 penser, Thal\u00e8s, il en critiqua fondamentalement les affirmations. Le monde est fait d\u2019eau et la Terre flotte dessus\u00a0? Faux, dit Anaximandre, le monde est fait de vide et la Terre y est en \u00e9quilibre. Et ainsi de suite.<\/p>\n<p>A mi-chemin entre la r\u00e9v\u00e9rence absolue et le rejet brutal de celui qui pense diff\u00e9remment, Anaximandre a ouvert une troisi\u00e8me voie\u00a0: le <i>chemin de la connaissance<\/i>, qui s\u2019appuie sur les conqu\u00eates intellectuelles des pr\u00e9d\u00e9cesseurs pour en relever certaines erreurs et tenter de <i>faire mieux<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Toute la science moderne d\u00e9coule de l\u2019efficacit\u00e9 de cette troisi\u00e8me voie. Celle-ci fait le pari que la \u00ab\u00a0v\u00e9rit\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb est peut-\u00eatre accessible, mais graduellement, et par raffinements successifs.
