On la doit \u00e0 Konstantin Tsiolkovski, un instituteur russe du d\u00e9but du xx<sup>e<\/sup>\u00a0si\u00e8cle, ardent partisan de l\u2019exploration et de la colonisation de l\u2019espace\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0L\u2019Homme ne restera pas sur Terre \u00e0 jamais, mais, toujours en qu\u00eate de lumi\u00e8re et d\u2019espace, il se hasardera d\u2019abord timidement hors de l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re, puis fera la conqu\u00eate du syst\u00e8me solaire tout entier\u00a0\u00bb, ajoute-t-il. En 1903, il publie le premier trait\u00e9 de fus\u00e9ologie et explique comment quitter la gravit\u00e9 terrestre pour atteindre le vide de l\u2019espace. Wernher von Braun est le plus brillant d\u2019entre eux. Le 3\u00a0octobre 1942, il r\u00e9ussit le tir de la premi\u00e8re fus\u00e9e militaire. Baptis\u00e9e V2, elle franchit pour la premi\u00e8re fois le seuil du domaine spatial, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire 80\u00a0kilom\u00e8tres d\u2019altitude. Mais c\u2019est une arme de destruction. Le r\u00eave est bien l\u00e0, celui de l\u2019exploration du cosmos lointain, avec comme objectif la station orbitale et la Lune.
