En haut \u00e0 gauche : vue d&#8217;artiste figurant les ondes gravitationnelles engendr\u00e9es par un syst\u00e8me binaires d&#8217;\u00e9toiles compactes (\u00e9toiles \u00e0 neutrons et\/ou trous noirs). Il s&#8217;agit en l&#8217;occurrence de trous noirs &#8220;stellaires&#8221;, bien que dans l&#8217;\u00e9v\u00e9nement du 14 septembre 2015 les masses sont sensiblement plus \u00e9lev\u00e9es que la &#8220;normale&#8221;, ce qui soul\u00e8ve d&#8217;int\u00e9ressantes questions sur la formation de tels couples. La masse du trou noir final est, dans les deux cas, inf\u00e9rieure \u00e0 la somme des masses des trous noirs parents : en vertu de la formule E=mc2, la diff\u00e9rence a pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9vacu\u00e9e sous forme d&#8217;\u00e9nergie gravitationnelle propag\u00e9e par les ondes. Dans les deux cas aussi, ces \u00e9v\u00e9nements se sont produits il y a pr\u00e8s de 1,5 milliards d&#8217;ann\u00e9es dans le pass\u00e9. Notons qu&#8217;un troisi\u00e8me \u00e9v\u00e9nement similaire, semblant lui aussi \u00e9maner d&#8217;une fusion de trous noirs situ\u00e9s cette fois \u00e0 plus de 3 milliards d&#8217;ann\u00e9es-lumi\u00e8re, a \u00e9t\u00e9 observ\u00e9 le 12 octobre 2015, mais sa signification statistique n\u2019est pas suffisante pour le qualifier.
