En 1919, \u00e0 la faveur d\u2019une traduction d\u2019annales d\u2019astronomie chinoise, le Su\u00e9dois Lundmark fit le rapprochement entre cette brillante n\u00e9buleuse de gaz chaud en expansion et l\u2019\u00e9toile nouvelle de 1054, situ\u00e9es dans la m\u00eame r\u00e9gion du ciel. En 1928, Edwin Hubble mesura la vitesse d\u2019expansion de la n\u00e9buleuse du Crabe et lui attribua un \u00e2ge d\u2019environ 900\u00a0ans, en bon accord avec la \u00ab\u00a0date d\u2019explosion\u00a0\u00bb de 1054. Les filaments sont compos\u00e9s principalement d&#8217;Hydrog\u00e8ne. Les couleurs indiquent les mat\u00e9riaux expuls\u00e9s par l&#8217;explosion de cette supernova : le bleu correspond \u00e0 l\u2019Oxyg\u00e8ne neutre (non ionis\u00e9), le vert au Soufre ionis\u00e9 une fois, et le rouge \u00e0 l&#8217;Oxyg\u00e8ne doublement ionis\u00e9.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">En 1934, Walter Baade et Fritz Zwicky avanc\u00e8rent l\u2019id\u00e9e que les neutrons pouvaient exercer une pression d\u00e9g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9e capable de supporter une masse stellaire plus massive que la limite de stabilit\u00e9 des naines blanches. S\u2019int\u00e9ressant de pr\u00e8s \u00e0 la n\u00e9buleuse du Crabe comme r\u00e9sultant d\u2019une explosion de supernova, ils supput\u00e8rent en son centre la pr\u00e9sence d\u2019une \u00e9toile \u00e0 neutrons. Leur article fut oubli\u00e9 jusqu\u2019en 1968, lorsque la d\u00e9couverte du pulsar PSR\u00a0B0351+21 au sein de la n\u00e9buleuse du Crabe renfor\u00e7a l\u2019hypoth\u00e8se selon laquelle des \u00e9toiles \u00e0 neutrons sont form\u00e9es lors de ces explosions stellaires. La m\u00eame ann\u00e9e, l\u2019interpr\u00e9tation du ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne de pulsar en termes d\u2019une \u00e9toile \u00e0 neutrons magn\u00e9tis\u00e9e et en rotation rapide fut propos\u00e9e par Franco Pacini et Thomas Gold. Par son extraordinaire beaut\u00e9 bien s\u00fbr, celle d\u2019un \u00e9tincelant tombeau stellaire dont les \u00e9clats ensemenceront un jour des pouponni\u00e8res d\u2019\u00e9toiles en \u00e9l\u00e9ments chimiques lourds, ceux-l\u00e0 m\u00eame qui forment nos chairs, nos os et nos sangs. Aussi par cette cha\u00eene historique qui nous relie \u00e0 un mill\u00e9naire d\u2019observation d\u2019\u00e9v\u00e9nements c\u00e9lestes exceptionnels, vus \u00e0 travers le prisme de cultures et d\u2019interpr\u00e9tations si divers.
