Tout le monde conna\u00eet l\u2019effet papillon\u00a0: petites causes, grandes cons\u00e9quences comme certains l\u2019ont chant\u00e9.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>L\u2019origine de la m\u00e9taphore<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>En 1972, \u00e0 une conf\u00e9rence de m\u00e9t\u00e9orologie, Edward Lorenz a pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 un expos\u00e9 sous un titre qui a frapp\u00e9 les esprits\u00a0:<\/p>\n<p><em>Le battement d\u2019ailes d\u2019un papillon au Br\u00e9sil peut-il provoquer une tornade au Texas\u00a0? <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Cette m\u00e9taphore n\u2019est toutefois pas de Lorenz mais d\u2019un organisateur de la conf\u00e9rence, Philip Merilees. Pour justifier sa question, Lorenz utilisait un mod\u00e8le math\u00e9matique tr\u00e8s simplifi\u00e9 de l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re terrestre o\u00f9 il n\u2019avait conserv\u00e9 que trois inconnues pouvant donc \u00eatre repr\u00e9sent\u00e9es par un point de l\u2019espace. Il s\u2019agit de ce qu\u2019on appelle en math\u00e9matiques un syst\u00e8me dynamique. On part d\u2019une condition initiale, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire d\u2019un point repr\u00e9sentant l\u2019\u00e9tat du syst\u00e8me \u00e0 l\u2019instant initial et le mod\u00e8le nous donne les \u00e9tats du syst\u00e8me aux instants qui suivent, th\u00e9oriquement ind\u00e9finiment.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>L\u2019attracteur de Lorenz<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Dans le cas du mod\u00e8le de Lorenz, chaque condition initiale donne une orbite ressemblant grossi\u00e8rement aux deux ailes d\u2019un papillon. Peu importe, le papillon a s\u00e9duit bien au-del\u00e0 de la sph\u00e8re math\u00e9matique sans que, pour autant, le message de Lorenz soit compl\u00e8tement compris. En effet s\u2019il mettait l\u2019accent sur la sensibilit\u00e9 aux conditions initiales, un faible changement pouvant avoir de grosses cons\u00e9quences, il corrigeait imm\u00e9diatement l\u2019id\u00e9e de la soumission au hasard d\u2019un battement d\u2019aile de papillon par\u00a0:<\/p>\n<p><i>J\u2019avance l\u2019id\u00e9e qu\u2019au fil des ann\u00e9es de petites perturbations ne modifient pas la fr\u00e9quence d\u2019apparition d\u2019\u00e9v\u00e9nements comme les tornades\u00a0: la seule chose qu\u2019ils peuvent faire, c\u2019est de modifier l\u2019ordre dans lequel ces \u00e9v\u00e9nements se produisent.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Nous sommes ainsi tr\u00e8s loin de la notion couramment vulgaris\u00e9e\u00a0: <i>petites causes, grandes cons\u00e9quences<\/i>. Dans la pens\u00e9e de Lorenz, le chaos sert \u00e0 la pr\u00e9vision, les orbites ne sont pas al\u00e9atoires, elles se situent sur l\u2019une ou l\u2019autre aile de l\u2019attracteur, le passage de l\u2019une \u00e0 l\u2019autre semblant al\u00e9atoire.
