Elle consiste pourtant \u00e0 assimiler nombre et longueur, deux notions <em>a priori<\/em> distinctes. En grec, le sens premier d\u2019analogie est \u00ab\u00a0proportion math\u00e9matique\u00a0\u00bb. On passe d\u2019une quantit\u00e9 \u00e0 une autre par l\u2019application d\u2019un certain rapport. Cependant, d\u00e8s l\u2019\u00e9poque de Platon, ce terme a pris le sens plus g\u00e9n\u00e9ral de correspondance, de ressemblance, de similitude. En math\u00e9matiques, il est aujourd\u2019hui utilis\u00e9 \u00e0 plusieurs niveaux, du concret \u00e0 l\u2019abstrait, du rigoureux \u00e0 l\u2019approximatif ou \u00e0 l\u2019heuristique, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire \u00e0 ce qui donne des id\u00e9es.<\/p>\n<h2>Et les multiplications &#8230;<\/h2>\n<p>La fonction logarithme transformant une multiplication en addition donne alors une m\u00e9thode analogique pour calculer un produit. Il suffit de transformer l\u2019\u00e9chelle lin\u00e9aire en \u00e9chelle logarithmique. En faisant co\u00efncider la graduation 1 de l\u2019une et la graduation 2 de l\u2019autre, puis en alignant le curseur sur la graduation 5 de la premi\u00e8re, on lit le r\u00e9sultat de la multiplication 2 x 5 sur la seconde.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Bien entendu, la r\u00e8gle \u00e0 calcul permet d&#8217;effectuer \u00e9galement des divisions et toutes sortes de calculs plus complexes.<\/p>\n<h2>Le calcul analogique<\/h2>\n<p>De fa\u00e7on plus g\u00e9n\u00e9rale, l\u2019id\u00e9e du calcul analogique est de repr\u00e9senter les nombres par des grandeurs g\u00e9om\u00e9triques (longueurs, aires, volumes, angles) ou physiques (m\u00e9caniques, \u00e9lectriques, hydrauliques, chimiques), et d\u2019exploiter des ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes g\u00e9om\u00e9triques ou physiques dont la mod\u00e9lisation math\u00e9matique est fond\u00e9e sur les \u00e9quations que l\u2019on veut r\u00e9soudre. En particulier, des syst\u00e8mes \u00e9lectriques permettent de r\u00e9soudre automatiquement certaines \u00e9quations\u00a0: celles qui les r\u00e9gissent. Les calculateurs analogiques ont \u00e9t\u00e9 en usage jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ce que les ordinateurs, ou calculateurs num\u00e9riques, les supplantent, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire jusqu\u2019au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 70.
