La pierre centrale, en coin dans le dispositif, est appel\u00e9e la clef de voute. Il est probable que cette m\u00e9thode ait \u00e9t\u00e9 trouv\u00e9e par essais et erreurs m\u00eame si elle s\u2019explique tr\u00e8s bien par la pesanteur, en calculant le bilan des forces exerc\u00e9es, ce que les ing\u00e9nieurs savaient faire \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque d\u2019Archim\u00e8de (III<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle avant notre \u00e8re). En 1418, la cath\u00e9drale \u00e9tait achev\u00e9e mis \u00e0 part un trou b\u00e9ant de 45 m\u00e8tres de diam\u00e8tre au-dessus d\u2019un tambour octogonal de 53 m\u00e8tres de haut. D\u2019apr\u00e8s les plans de l\u2019architecte initial, d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 depuis longtemps, un d\u00f4me devait reposer sur ce tambour. L\u2019ennui est que personne ne savait ni comment le faire tenir sur une structure aussi l\u00e9g\u00e8re, ni comment le construire sans \u00e9chafaudage en bois, comme on le faisait \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque mais impossible ici du fait de la trop grande port\u00e9e. La question fut mise au concours et Filippo Brunelleschi (1377 \u2013 1446) le remporta avec une double structure l\u00e9g\u00e8re, une \u00e0 l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur, l\u2019autre \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur. Finalement, le tout fut mont\u00e9 progressivement par anneaux horizontaux et sans \u00e9chafaudage, un peu comme on le fait dans certains pays d\u2019Afrique pour des cases en forme d\u2019ogive.
