Cela pourrait \u00e9tonner, dans la mesure o\u00f9 les media r\u00e9p\u00e8tent \u00e0 tort qu\u2019il n\u2019y a pas d\u2019eau ou tr\u00e8s peu d\u2019eau sur Mars, et que l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re est quasi inexistante. Mais ce sont des propos tout relatifs. L\u2019atmosph\u00e8re martienne est bel et bien l\u00e0 : en regard de nos 1000 hectopascals (millibars), ses 7 ou 8 hectopascals paraissent insignifiants, mais ils sont suffisants pour porter et \u00e9changer de nombreuses mol\u00e9cules gazeuses \u00e0 travers la plan\u00e8te, engendrer des vents, soulever des poussi\u00e8res et soutenir des nuages, aussi t\u00e9nus soient-ils. Quant \u00e0 l\u2019eau, on sait qu\u2019il en existe de grandes quantit\u00e9s sur Mars sous forme de glace, notamment aux deux p\u00f4les. Image de la sonde MGS (NASA)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<p><strong>Des cirrus d\u2019altitude<\/strong><br \/><br \/>Vu la faible pression atmosph\u00e9rique, cette \u00ab condensation \u00bb est en fait une \u00ab solidification \u00bb : la vapeur d\u2019eau se transforme en cristaux de glace et non en gouttelettes liquides, en tout cas \u00e0 l\u2019heure actuelle. Autrefois, il y a quatre milliards d\u2019ann\u00e9es, quand l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re \u00e9tait plus dense, il pleuvait sur Mars.<br \/><br \/>Des nuages de cristaux de glace, on conna\u00eet bien sur Terre : ce sont les cirrus, ces hauts voiles nuageux, souvent en formes de virgules ou d\u2019ar\u00eates de poissons. Sur Mars, on estime qu\u2019ils se forment \u00e0 environ 60 km d\u2019altitude (contre une dizaine pour les cirrus terrestres). L\u2019atmosph\u00e8re martienne a beau \u00eatre rar\u00e9fi\u00e9e, elle s\u2019\u00e9tend loin dans l\u2019espace en raison de la faible gravit\u00e9.<br \/><br \/>Comme sur Terre, les nuages aiment se former l\u00e0 o\u00f9 l\u2019eau est abondante, ou l\u00e0 o\u00f9 un obstacle topographique \u00e9l\u00e8ve l\u2019air humide vers les froides altitudes. C\u2019est notamment le cas sous le vent des grands volcans martiens de l\u2019\u00e9quateur.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Cristaux de dioxyde de carbone<\/strong><br \/><br \/>Le dioxyde de carbone peut lui aussi geler, aux temp\u00e9ratures les plus basses : aux alentours de -130 \u00b0C \u00e0 -150 \u00b0C, selon l\u2019altitude. C\u2019est le cas autour de la calotte polaire dans l\u2019h\u00e9misph\u00e8re o\u00f9 c\u2019est l\u2019hiver : ces nuages de cristaux de CO2, souvent en vagues, encerclent la calotte. C\u2019est le cas des nuages dits \u00ab iris\u00e9s \u00bb parce qu\u2019ils jouent avec la lumi\u00e8re du soleil pour se parer de teintes pastel. Ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne de dispersion lumineuse se d\u00e9roule lorsque les cristaux sont de taille sensiblement \u00e9gale, au d\u00e9but de la formation des nuages.<\/p>\r\n<p>Et comme les nuages de CO2 sont \u00e0 haute altitude, ils sont souvent encore \u00e9clair\u00e9s par le soleil alors que l\u2019astre du jour s\u2019est d\u00e9j\u00e0 couch\u00e9 au niveau du sol.
