Prot\u00e9g\u00e9 du vent par une cloche, il devrait pouvoir d\u00e9celer des s\u00e9ismes de magnitude 3,5 ou plus, \u00e0 grande distance de la sonde (pour m\u00e9moire, un s\u00e9isme de magnitude 3,5 sur l\u2019\u00e9chelle de Richter est tout juste d\u00e9celable par un \u00eatre humain s\u2019il se d\u00e9clenchait dans ses environs imm\u00e9diats). On s\u2019attend \u00e0 ce qu\u2019il y ait une cinquantaine de tels s\u00e9ismes sur Mars chaque ann\u00e9e. (\u00a9 IPGP\/David Ducros)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Non seulement l\u2019instrument fran\u00e7ais va nous donner une estimation pr\u00e9cise du nombre de s\u00e9ismes sur Mars, mais en analysant les trains d\u2019onde re\u00e7us\u2014qui auront travers\u00e9 en chemin l\u2019int\u00e9rieur de la plan\u00e8te\u2014les plan\u00e9tologues devraient \u00eatre capables d\u2019estimer les \u00e9paisseurs respectives de la cro\u00fbte, du manteau et du noyau. Les dimensions et l\u2019\u00e9tat du noyau de fer au centre de la plan\u00e8te rouge les int\u00e9ressent tout particuli\u00e8rement. Comme ce noyau ne d\u00e9gage plus de champ magn\u00e9tique depuis tr\u00e8s longtemps (environ 4 milliards d\u2019ann\u00e9es), la tentation est grande de penser que le fer autrefois liquide s\u2019est solidifi\u00e9, emp\u00eachant tout brassage g\u00e9n\u00e9rateur de champs \u00e9lectriques et magn\u00e9tiques. Mais ce n\u2019est pas si simple que cela\u00a0: la partie sup\u00e9rieure du noyau peut encore \u00eatre liquide, mais trop mince pour abriter de telles cellules de convection. Ou m\u00eame \u00eatre totalement liquide, mais pareillement \u00ab\u00a0\u00e0 l\u2019arr\u00eat\u00a0\u00bb, par manque de gradient thermique en son sein, car trop bien isol\u00e9 du reste de la plan\u00e8te, et donc en \u00e9tat \u00ab\u00a0isotherme\u00a0\u00bb.
