Pour Alfred McEwen, v\u00e9t\u00e9ran plan\u00e9tologue sur l\u2019\u00e9quipe de la sonde orbitale MRO, de la vapeur d\u2019eau est aspir\u00e9e de la fine atmosph\u00e8re par les sels qui s\u2019hydratent alors (ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne de d\u00e9liquescence). Mais la question se pose\u2014et je doute qu\u2019elle l\u2019ait \u00e9t\u00e9 lors de conf\u00e9rence de presse : comment autant de vapeur d\u2019eau se trouve-t-elle disponible pour l\u2019op\u00e9ration, et \u00e0 la pression minimaliste \u00e0 la surface, comment peut-elle physiquement devenir liquide. L\u2019autre solution serait que de l\u2019eau saum\u00e2tre sous pression (donc avec plus de chance d\u2019\u00eatre liquide) puisse remonter du proche sous-sol \u00e0 l\u2019endroit de l\u2019\u00e9coulement. Et en tout \u00e9tat de cause, cela reste des quantit\u00e9s infimes d\u2019eau mobilis\u00e9es sur ces pentes \u00e0 chaque fin de printemps, les estimations parlant de 100 000 m\u00e8tres cubes comme ordre de grandeur sur l\u2019ensemble de la plan\u00e8te, soit une trentaine de piscines olympiques. Le v\u00e9ritable r\u00e9servoir d\u2019eau martienne reste toute celle emprisonn\u00e9e dans les glaces polaires, qui correspond \u00e0 de v\u00e9ritables mers gel\u00e9es. Mais toute confirmation d\u2019eau liquide coulant actuellement sur la plan\u00e8te est bonne \u00e0 prendre et nous \u00e9loigne du st\u00e9r\u00e9otype d\u2019une Mars gel\u00e9e en permanence, ravivant l\u2019optimisme des chercheurs de vie extraterrestre. Et comme Alfred McEwen l\u2019a dit dans un sourire : ces pentes sont trop raides pour un robot.
