(NASA\/JPL)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mars poss\u00e8de de magnifiques volcans, consid\u00e9r\u00e9s tr\u00e8s vieux pour la plupart, mais dont certaines coul\u00e9es de lave paraissent dater de quelques deux ou trois millions d&#8217;ann\u00e9es &#8220;seulement&#8221;\u2014un clin d&#8217;oeil \u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e9chelle g\u00e9ologique, mais qui ne sont pas exactement contemporaines\u00a0! \u00c0 ce rythme d&#8217;activit\u00e9\u2014sur le d\u00e9clin car la petite plan\u00e8te rouge se refroidit tr\u00e8s vit\u2014 les chances que notre g\u00e9n\u00e9ration observe une \u00e9ruption sur Mars sont de l&#8217;ordre de 1 sur 20\u00a0000, \u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s la m\u00eame probabilit\u00e9 que la Terre se fasse frapper par un ast\u00e9ro\u00efde d&#8217;un kilom\u00e8tre de taille, ou de gagner plus de 1000 \u20ac au Loto en ne jouant qu&#8217;une fois dans sa vie. Malgr\u00e9 la plus grande taille de la plan\u00e8te soeur et la chaleur interne beaucoup plus cons\u00e9quente, se traduisant par un tr\u00e8s grand nombre de volcans \u00e0 la surface de la plan\u00e8te, l&#8217;abondance de gros crat\u00e8res d&#8217;impact n&#8217;ayant pas \u00e9t\u00e9 renseveli par les laves faisaient craindre que tout neufs qu&#8217;ils paraissaient, les volcans de V\u00e9nus n&#8217;avaient pas fait \u00e9ruption depuis des dizaines ou des centaines de millions d&#8217;ann\u00e9es. L&#8217;espoir paraissait donc encore plus t\u00e9nu de surprendre une \u00e9ruption aujourd&#8217;hui sur V\u00e9nus, malgr\u00e9 quelques indices intriguants, comme une bouff\u00e9e de dioxyde de soufre grimpant dans la haute atmosph\u00e8re lors du survol de la plan\u00e8te par la sonde am\u00e9ricaine Pioneer dans les ann\u00e9es 1980, et plus r\u00e9cemment la d\u00e9tection d&#8217;une autre bouff\u00e9e par la sonde europ\u00e9enne Venus Express en 2006.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/frankel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/06\/Venus-map-with-rift-location-mid-res.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[361]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-369\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/frankel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/06\/Venus-map-with-rift-location-mid-res.jpg\" alt=\"Venus map with rift location (mid-res)\" width=\"2900\" height=\"2900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/frankel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/06\/Venus-map-with-rift-location-mid-res.jpg 2900w, https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/frankel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/06\/Venus-map-with-rift-location-mid-res-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/frankel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/06\/Venus-map-with-rift-location-mid-res-450x450.jpg 450w, https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/frankel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/06\/Venus-map-with-rift-location-mid-res-1024x1024.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2900px) 100vw, 2900px\" \/><\/a><em>Le site des bouff\u00e9es de chaleur : Ganiki Chasma au nord de Sapas Mons<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ce sont les donn\u00e9es de V\u00e9nus-Express, sonde de l&#8217;ESA, et notamment celles de sa cam\u00e9ra VMC (<em>Venus Monitoring Camera<\/em>) qui ont permis aux chercheurs Eugene Shalygin, du Max-Planck Institute de G\u00f6ttingen, et Alexander Bazilevski et Jim Head de Brown University (USA) de d\u00e9tecter en infrarouge quatre anomalies thermiques dans le rift de Ganika (Ganiki Chasma) dans la zone volcanique d&#8217;Atla Regio, au nord des volcans Sapas, Maat et Ozza Montes (voir carte ci-dessous).<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/frankel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/06\/Ganiki-Chasma.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[361]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-367\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/frankel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/06\/Ganiki-Chasma.jpg\" alt=\"Ganiki Chasma\" width=\"700\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/frankel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/06\/Ganiki-Chasma.jpg 700w, https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/frankel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/06\/Ganiki-Chasma-450x232.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>Trois des anomalies thermiques d\u00e9tect\u00e9es dans Ganiki Chasma: \u00e0 gauche, la carte thermique de V\u00e9nus-Express, \u00e0 droite les objets chauds report\u00e9s sur la carte radar de Magellan, o\u00f9 apparaissent rifts et volcans.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Les anomalies montrent une \u00e9mission thermique les 22 et 24 juin 2008. Pour un kilom\u00e8tre carr\u00e9, les mod\u00e8les annoncent 830 \u00b0C, loin au-dessus de la moyenne de 450 \u00b0C que le sol rayonne en permanence \u00e0 cause du puissant effet de serre sur V\u00e9nus. Si on suppose une surface \u00e9mettrice plus petite, la temp\u00e9rature pourrait m\u00eame friser les 1400 \u00b0C. En tout \u00e9tat de cause, il s&#8217;agit d&#8217;une \u00e9ruption de lave prise sur le fait, et qui serait vraisemblablement basaltique, sinon plus m\u00e9tallique et plus chaude encore (si les 1400 \u00b0C \u00e9taient av\u00e9r\u00e9s).<\/p>\n<p>V\u00e9nus vient donc de voler la politesse \u00e0 Mars et de se positionner comme la seconde plan\u00e8te volcaniquement active aujourd&#8217;hui, apr\u00e8s la Terre.
