Construit par Lockheed Martin, le vaisseau p\u00e8se 8,6 tonnes\u2014deux fois la masse d\u2019Apollo\u2014et mesure 5 m de diam\u00e8tre contre 3 m pour son illustre pr\u00e9d\u00e9cesseur, ce qui donne 50 % de plus de volume habitable. Le lancement a eu lieu avec un jour de retard, en raison de fortes rafales de vent et de basses temp\u00e9ratures ayant caus\u00e9 quelques soucis avec des valves fonctionnant au ralenti. Le vaisseau Orion a accompli une premi\u00e8re orbite autour de la Terre, puis apr\u00e8s r\u00e9allumage de l\u2019\u00e9tage sup\u00e9rieur de la fus\u00e9e qui lui \u00e9tait encore attach\u00e9, une seconde orbite beaucoup plus haute, culminant \u00e0 6000 km d\u2019altitude. Ce sera le test suivant, en 2018, qui sera critique et beaucoup plus spectaculaire puisque, bien que toujours sans astronautes \u00e0 bord, il s\u2019agira cette fois d\u2019utiliser la fus\u00e9e g\u00e9ante SLS pour propulser Orion et son module de service europ\u00e9en sur une boucle qui passera derri\u00e8re la Lune, soit un vol de type Apollo (Exploration Mission 1). Le troisi\u00e8me vol d\u2019Orion (Exploration Mission 2), pr\u00e9vu pour 2021, emportera cette fois un \u00e9quipage en banlieue lunaire, avec l\u2019objectif d\u2019\u00e9chantillonner un petit ast\u00e9ro\u00efde qui aura \u00e9t\u00e9 parqu\u00e9 l\u00e0 par un remorqueur automatique. Mais il est temps aussi pour les Etats-Unis\u2014et pour l\u2019Europe leur partenaire\u2014de lui pr\u00e9voir un avenir et une utilisation logique et structur\u00e9e, soit pour retourner sur la Lune, soit pour se rendre sur Mars.
