Et trois jours plus tard, c\u2019est dans la nuit de mardi \u00e0 mercredi (24 septembre) qu\u2019arrive \u00e0 son tour la sonde indienne Mars Orbiter Mission. Elles ont co\u00fbt\u00e9 respectivement 671 et 74 millions de dollars, ce qui en font des sondes \u00ab raisonnable \u00bb pour la premi\u00e8re et carr\u00e9ment low cost pour la seconde.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nEn contrepartie, ces nouvelles sondes n\u2019ont pas le \u00ab sex appeal \u00bb des missions pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes : elles ne se posent pas sur la plan\u00e8te rouge et elles ne font pas de photos spectaculaires (sauf la sonde indienne qui poss\u00e8de une petite cam\u00e9ra). Pour ces raisons, elles sont condamn\u00e9es \u00e0 faire peu de vagues dans le paysage m\u00e9diatique, surcharg\u00e9 par ailleurs en conflits internationaux et en actualit\u00e9s politico-\u00e9conomiques.<br \/>\nL\u2019objectif de MAVEN (NASA) est d\u2019analyser la haute atmosph\u00e8re martienne pour mesurer entre autres la lente \u00e9chapp\u00e9e de ses gaz dans le cosmos, peu maintenus en place par la faible gravit\u00e9, et reconstituer \u00e0 rebours l\u2019histoire de cette d\u00e9cadence atmosph\u00e9rique qui a fait de la plan\u00e8te rouge un monde aujourd\u2019hui sec et gel\u00e9.<br \/>\nJoli bonus : la sonde est arriv\u00e9e \u00e0 destination juste un mois avant le passage fortuit d\u2019une com\u00e8te\u2014baptis\u00e9e Siding Spring du nom de l\u2019observatoire qui l\u2019a d\u00e9couvert\u2014dans la banlieue martienne, \u00e0 130 000 km de Mars (soit le tiers de la distance Terre-Lune). Un tel passage d\u2019une com\u00e8te aussi pr\u00e8s d\u2019une plan\u00e8te est rarissime et MAVEN se d\u00e9p\u00eachera de mettre ses instruments en service pour l\u2019observer. Technologique, puisqu\u2019elle sert \u00e0 familiariser les ing\u00e9nieurs avec les vols interplan\u00e9taires et la mise en orbite d\u2019une sonde autour de Mars. Scientifique, car les ing\u00e9nieurs ont trouv\u00e9 moyen de concevoir et d\u2019installer \u00e0 bord une petite cam\u00e9ra couleurs, un spectrom\u00e8tre imageur infrarouge, un d\u00e9tecteur atmosph\u00e9rique de m\u00e9thane, un spectrom\u00e8tre de masse pour les particules de la haute atmosph\u00e8re et un analyseur d\u2019hydrog\u00e8ne.
