C&#8217;est en effet le 6 octobre 1995 que les chercheurs suisses Michel Mayor et Didier Queloz ouvraient le bal avec la d\u00e9tection de la premi\u00e8re plan\u00e8te extrasolaire. En utilisant le t\u00e9lescope de 1,93 m de l\u2019<a href=\"http:\/\/www.obs-hp.fr\/welcome.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Observatoire de Haute-Provence<\/a>, ils r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e8rent l&#8217;existence de <a href=\"http:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/magazines\/espace\/infos\/actu\/d\/planetes-extrasolaires-premiere-fois-on-repere-lumiere-exoplanete-51-pegasi-b-57991\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">51 Pegasi b<\/a>. Trois d&#8217;entre elles ont des conditions compatibles avec la pr\u00e9sence d&#8217;eau.\u00a0 \u00a9 NASA\/R. Hurt\/T. Pyle<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Au 1er janvier 2021, plus de 4.300 exoplan\u00e8tes ont \u00e9t\u00e9 confirm\u00e9es dans 3.242 syst\u00e8mes plan\u00e9taires. 720 d&#8217;entre eux sont des syst\u00e8mes plan\u00e9taires multiples. Mais la premi\u00e8re preuve de l&#8217;existence d&#8217;exoplan\u00e8tes est peut-\u00eatre beaucoup plus ancienne.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h5>Plong\u00e9e dans les archives :<\/h5>\n<p>Aurait-on pu rep\u00e9rer accidentellement une exoplan\u00e8te avant 1995 ? Pour r\u00e9pondre \u00e0 cette fascinante question, il faut se plonger dans les archives photographiques des observatoires. Les plaques photographiques ont commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 \u00eatre utilis\u00e9es \u00e0 la fin du XIXe si\u00e8cle en astronomie. C&#8217;est l&#8217;\u00e9tablissement de la Carte photographique du Ciel qui va les rendre indispensables.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13393\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13393\" style=\"width: 339px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/01\/plaque.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[5496]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13393\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/01\/plaque-339x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"339\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/01\/plaque-339x450.jpg 339w, https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/01\/plaque.jpg 623w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 339px) 100vw, 339px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13393\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ce n\u00e9gatif de la collection de la Carte Photographique du Ciel r\u00e9alis\u00e9 en 1906 montre 2340 \u00e9toiles. \u00a9 Observatoire de Paris<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sous l&#8217;impulsion de Ernest Mouchez, directeur de l&#8217;<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/2017\/03\/21\/anniversaire-lobservatoire-de-paris-fete-350-ans-de-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Observatoire de Paris<\/a>, dix-sept instruments \u00e9quatoriaux photographiques sont install\u00e9s \u00e0 diff\u00e9rentes latitudes. Cette entreprise internationale a pour but de cartographier l&#8217;ensemble du ciel \u00e9toil\u00e9. Si ce projet titanesque ne sera jamais achev\u00e9, il donne \u00e0 la photographie astronomique ses premi\u00e8res lettres de noblesse.<\/p>\n<h5>Une naine blanche tr\u00e8s proche :<\/h5>\n<p>\u00c0 partir du d\u00e9but du XXe si\u00e8cle, tous les observatoires astronomiques utilisent des plaques photographiques. En 1917 l&#8217;astronome n\u00e9erlando-am\u00e9ricain Adriaan van Maanen (1884 \u2013 1946) d\u00e9couvre dans la constellation des Poissons une <a href=\"http:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/magazines\/espace\/infos\/actu\/d\/univers-lointain-on-ecoute-vibrations-naine-blanche-coeur-cristallise-47270\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">naine blanche<\/a>. Elle est situ\u00e9e \u00e0 seulement un peu plus de 14 ann\u00e9es-lumi\u00e8re du Soleil. Le spectre de cet astre, qui prend le nom d&#8217;\u00e9toile de van Maanen, est enregistr\u00e9 sur une plaque de verre peu apr\u00e8s \u00e0 l&#8217;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mtwilson.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Observatoire du mont Wilson<\/a> par Walter Adams (1876 &#8211; 1956). Cet astronome en deviendra le directeur quelques ann\u00e9es plus tard.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12480\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12480\" style=\"width: 276px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/09\/hooker.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[5496]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12480\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/09\/hooker-276x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"276\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/09\/hooker-276x450.jpg 276w, https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/09\/hooker.jpg 554w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 276px) 100vw, 276px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12480\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Le t\u00e9lescope Hooker de 2,5 m\u00e8tres de diam\u00e8tre est le plus grand de l&#8217;Observatoire du mont Wilson. Il a notamment \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9 par l&#8217;astronome Edwin Hubble pour ses observations de galaxies. \u00a9 Andrew Dunn<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ce spectre est archiv\u00e9 comme 250.000 autres plaques et ne revoit le jour qu&#8217;\u00e0 la demande de Jay Farihi (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucl.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University College of London<\/a>). Ce chercheur conduit alors une \u00e9tude sur les exoplan\u00e8tes autour des naines blanches (voir sa publication sur <a href=\"http:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1604.03092\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arxiv<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h5>Une troublante d\u00e9couverte :<\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">En examinant le spectre de l&#8217;\u00e9toile de van Maanen r\u00e9alis\u00e9 en 1917, Jay Farihi a la surprise de d\u00e9couvrir deux raies d&#8217;absorption (voir ci-dessous). On observe ces raies dans les spectres des naines blanches dites &#8220;pollu\u00e9es&#8221;. Ces astres sont en fait entour\u00e9s de vastes anneaux compos\u00e9s de d\u00e9bris plan\u00e9taires mais \u00e9galement d&#8217;ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes. C&#8217;est le cas par exemple de la naine blanche <a href=\"http:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/magazines\/espace\/infos\/actu\/d\/transits-planetaires-naine-blanche-surprise-train-dechiqueter-gros-asteroide-60230\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WD 1145+017<\/a> \u00e9tudi\u00e9e en 2014 par le t\u00e9lescope spatial Kepler. Et on imagine ais\u00e9ment que Walter Adams et ses coll\u00e8gues auraient \u00e9t\u00e9 bien en peine en 1917 d&#8217;interpr\u00e9ter la signification de ces deux raies d&#8217;absorption.
