C&#8217;est l\u00e0 que les deux bateaux d&#8217;une exp\u00e9dition command\u00e9e par l&#8217;explorateur n\u00e9erlandais Willem Barentsz furent pris par les glaces pendant l&#8217;hiver 1596. Le journal de bord de l&#8217;exp\u00e9dition relate un \u00e9trange ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne : en janvier 1597 l&#8217;\u00e9quipage vit deux fois le <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/2015\/08\/15\/dans-la-mer-le-soleil-est-encore-plus-beau\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Soleil <\/a>sur l&#8217;horizon, alors qu&#8217;\u00e0 cette latitude il n&#8217;\u00e9tait pas visible du 6 novembre au 8 f\u00e9vrier en raison de la nuit polaire.<\/p>\n\n<!-- iframe plugin v.5.1 wordpress.org\/plugins\/iframe\/ -->\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uhFTRLysbko\" frameborder=\"0\" 0=\"allowfullscreen\" scrolling=\"yes\" class=\"iframe-class\"><\/iframe>\n\n<p>Bien que l&#8217;observation de ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne fut contest\u00e9e \u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e9poque, on a fini par comprendre que les marins de l&#8217;exp\u00e9dition avaient observ\u00e9 un <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/2014\/05\/10\/faux-mirage-solaire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mirage <\/a>auquel on donna par la suite le nom d&#8217;effet Novaya Zemlya.<\/p>\n\n<!-- iframe plugin v.5.1 wordpress.org\/plugins\/iframe\/ -->\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PZp43UuOgcU\" frameborder=\"0\" 0=\"allowfullscreen\" scrolling=\"yes\" class=\"iframe-class\"><\/iframe>\n\n<p><!--more-->Comme tous les mirages, l&#8217;effet Novaya Zemlya est provoqu\u00e9 par la r\u00e9fraction atmosph\u00e9rique. Deux couches d&#8217;air diff\u00e9rentes (une froide surmont\u00e9e d&#8217;une autre plus chaude) ont la particularit\u00e9 de d\u00e9vier les rayons lumineux. Il arrive que la zone de transition thermique entre ces deux couches d&#8217;air (on parle de thermocline) se comporte comme une fibre optique en guidant vers le sol les rayons lumineux qui devraient normalement s&#8217;\u00e9chapper dans l&#8217;atmosph\u00e8re : le Soleil, bien qu&#8217;il\u00a0 soit sous l&#8217;horizon, devient alors visible.<\/p>\n<p>Depuis San Francisco, le photographe\u00a0Mila Zinkova s&#8217;int\u00e9resse beaucoup aux mirages solaires : en 2014 il avait photographi\u00e9 un <a href=\"http:\/\/epod.usra.edu\/blog\/2014\/08\/oddly-shaped-suns-at-sunset-as-viewed-from-san-francisco.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Soleil couchant<\/a> surmont\u00e9 d&#8217;un <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/2014\/12\/22\/rayon-vert-pour-le-solstice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rayon vert<\/a> avec des <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/2015\/11\/03\/ar-2443-un-spectaculaire-groupe-de-taches-solaires\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">taches solaires<\/a> multipli\u00e9es par la r\u00e9fraction atmosph\u00e9rique.
