Pourtant, quand le t\u00e9lescope a \u00e9t\u00e9 lanc\u00e9 en 1990, beaucoup de sp\u00e9cialistes doutaient de sa capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 photographier les <a href=\"https:\/\/cnes.fr\/dossiers\/galaxies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">galaxies<\/a> lointaines. \u00c0 l&#8217;\u00e9poque, le c\u00e9l\u00e8bre astrophysicien <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Bahcall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John Bahcall<\/a> \u00e9crivit m\u00eame dans la revue <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science<\/a> que l&#8217;instrument ne montrerait aucune galaxie qui ne soit d\u00e9j\u00e0 visible depuis le sol. Bourke-White<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Rapidement, les images acquises par la cam\u00e9ra WFPC2 (<a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/hubble\/observatory\/design\/instruments\/wide-field-planetary-cameras-1-and-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wide Field and Planetary Camera<\/a>) r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e8rent un v\u00e9ritable zoo cosmique. D\u00e8s lors, pourquoi na pas envisager de sonder des portions de ciel inconnues en effectuant de longues poses ? C&#8217;est l&#8217;id\u00e9e que sugg\u00e9ra <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Williams_(astronomer)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert Williams<\/a> en 1994, alors qu&#8217;il avait \u00e9t\u00e9 nomm\u00e9 \u00e0 la t\u00eate du STScI (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stsci.edu\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Space Telescope Science Institute<\/a>) un an plus t\u00f4t.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h5>Un aper\u00e7u de l&#8217;univers primitif :<\/h5>\n<p>Rapidement, Williams s&#8217;entoura d&#8217;une petite \u00e9quipe de chercheurs. En tant que directeur, il pouvait disposer \u00e0 sa guise de 10% du temps d&#8217;observation du t\u00e9lescope sans passer par le comit\u00e9 de validation. Il d\u00e9cida donc d&#8217;en profiter : pendant plus d&#8217;un an, l&#8217;\u00e9quipe effectua de nombreux tests pour s&#8217;assurer que le projet \u00e9tait r\u00e9alisable. Enfin, l&#8217;op\u00e9ration fut men\u00e9e entre le 18 et le 28 d\u00e9cembre 1995 :<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Hubble Deep Field: Looking Back In Time\" width=\"474\" height=\"267\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Gr_AF_AB1AU?start=97&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Le t\u00e9lescope r\u00e9alisa alors 342 images d&#8217;une minuscule portion de la <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grande_Ourse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grande Ourse<\/a>, dont la surface \u00e9tait \u00e9quivalente \u00e0 un carr\u00e9 de un millim\u00e8tre de c\u00f4t\u00e9 situ\u00e9 \u00e0 une distance de 1,4 m\u00e8tre. Une zone apparemment vide, dans laquelle Hubble d\u00e9couvrit pr\u00e8s de 3000 galaxies dont la plupart n&#8217;avaient jamais \u00e9t\u00e9 observ\u00e9es. Robert Williams d\u00e9clara alors : \u00ab <em>Ces dix derniers jours ont \u00e9t\u00e9 une exp\u00e9rience incroyable. \u00c0 mesure que les images apparaissaient sur nos \u00e9crans, nous n\u2019avons pu nous emp\u00eacher de nous demander si, d\u2019une certaine mani\u00e8re, nous n\u2019y voyions pas nos propres origines<\/em> \u00bb. Le succ\u00e8s de cette image fut tel que l&#8217;exp\u00e9rience a depuis \u00e9t\u00e9 renouvel\u00e9e.
