C\u2019est \u00e0 ce jour le record d\u2019atterrissage le plus \u00e9loign\u00e9 de la Terre (1,2 milliard de kilom\u00e8tres). Au cours de sa descente sous un parachute, la sonde n&#8217;a cess\u00e9 de nous transmettre des donn\u00e9es sur cet \u00e9tonnant satellite naturel glac\u00e9 sur lequel on a d\u00e9couvert des lacs de m\u00e9thane et d\u2019\u00e9thane liquide. Une fois pos\u00e9e sur un sol \u00e0 -180\u00b0C, dont la consistance s\u2019apparentait \u00e0 du sable mouill\u00e9, la sonde a fonctionn\u00e9 pendant deux heures avant de s&#8217;\u00e9teindre d\u00e9finitivement :<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2015\/01\/huygens_titan.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[20637]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1630\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2015\/01\/huygens_titan-450x337.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2015\/01\/huygens_titan-450x337.jpg 450w, https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2015\/01\/huygens_titan-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2015\/01\/huygens_titan.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tout avait commenc\u00e9 vingt-cinq ans plus t\u00f4t. Alors que Voyager 1 s&#8217;approchait de Saturne en juin 1980, quelques membres du <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Jet Propulsion Laboratory<\/em><\/a> se r\u00e9unissaient pour envisager une mission encore plus ambitieuse. Dix-sept ans plus tard, le 15 octobre 1997, d\u00e9collait la mission Cassini-Huygens. <!--more--><\/p>\n<h5>Une vaisseau et une sonde :<\/h5>\n<p>Cassini \u00e9tait l\u2019un des plus gros vaisseaux interplan\u00e9taires jamais construits. Il pesait 2.150 kilogrammes. Il fallait y ajouter les 350 kilogrammes de la sonde Huygens ainsi que trois tonnes d\u2019hydrazine pour la propulsion. Quant \u00e0 la sonde, con\u00e7ue par les Europ\u00e9ens, elle rendait hommage \u00e0 Christian Huygens, d\u00e9couvreur de Titan en 1655.<\/p>\n<h5>Un long voyage interplan\u00e9taire :<\/h5>\n<p>Sept ans apr\u00e8s son lancement en octobre 1997, le vaisseau est arriv\u00e9 \u00e0 proximit\u00e9 de Saturne. Le voyage avait \u00e9t\u00e9 rallong\u00e9 par deux passages vers V\u00e9nus, un vers la Terre et un autre vers Jupiter. Une partie de billard cosmique n\u00e9cessaire pour profiter au maximum de l&#8217;assistance gravitationnelle qu&#8217;offraient les plan\u00e8tes rencontr\u00e9es. Cette image a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9e par la cam\u00e9ra du vaisseau Cassini. \u00a9 NASA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Comme le rappelait avec humour le regrett\u00e9 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/2016\/05\/16\/video-andre-brahic-defendait-lhomo-rigolus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andr\u00e9 Brahic<\/a>, la sonde, qui portait le nom d&#8217;un protestant hollandais, avait fait un long voyage avec le vaisseau, dont le nom \u00e9tait celui d&#8217;un catholique italien, pour finalement se s\u00e9parer un 25 d\u00e9cembre !
