Ce dernier est connu pour avoir dirig\u00e9 l&#8217;Observatoire de Harvard (<a href=\"https:\/\/hco.cfa.harvard.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HCO<\/a>) de 1876 \u00e0 sa mort. C&#8217;est l\u00e0 qu&#8217;il r\u00e9alisa d&#8217;importants travaux de spectroscopie stellaire. Plusieurs astronomes f\u00e9minines travaill\u00e8rent sous ses ordres, comme la c\u00e9l\u00e8bre <a href=\"https:\/\/histoireparlesfemmes.com\/2014\/04\/10\/henrietta-swan-leavitt-lastronome-qui-revolutionna-notre-vision-de-lunivers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Henrietta Swan Leavitt<\/a>. Edward Charles Pickering fut \u00e9galement cofondateur en 1911 de l&#8217;<em>American Association of Variable Star Observers<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aavso.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AAVSO<\/a>). M\u00eame s&#8217;ils ont les m\u00eames initiales, ne le confondez pas avec William Hayward Pickering qui dirigea le <em>Jet Propulsion Laboratory<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JPL<\/a>) de 1954 \u00e0 1976. Dipl\u00f4m\u00e9 du <em>Massachusetts Institute of Technology<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mit.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MIT<\/a>) en 1879, William Henry entra au HCO dirig\u00e9 par son grand fr\u00e8re. Ce dernier lui confia d&#8217;abord la direction de la station d&#8217;observation de Arequipa au P\u00e9rou. Puis il l&#8217;envoya en 1900 \u00e0 Mandeville en Jama\u00efque pour y fonder une autre station d&#8217;observation. C&#8217;est l\u00e0 que le cadet fit le reste de sa carri\u00e8re d&#8217;astronome jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 sa mort en 1938.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h5>Lune vivante :<\/h5>\n<p>Arm\u00e9 d&#8217;une lunette de 25 centim\u00e8tres de diam\u00e8tre, William Henry passa beaucoup de temps \u00e0 scruter la Lune. Avec une imagination aussi d\u00e9bordante que celle de <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/2018\/11\/27\/percival-lowell-lhomme-qui-aimait-trop-la-planete-mars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Percival Lowell<\/a>, il se mit \u00e0 interpr\u00e9ter audacieusement ce qu&#8217;il observait. Pierre Rousseau \u00e9crivait \u00e0 ce propos dans &#8220;Notre amie la Lune&#8221; publi\u00e9 en\u00a0 1943 : &#8220;<em>Il semble que ces exc\u00e8s d&#8217;invention, ces hardiesses un peu biscornues soient le p\u00e9ch\u00e9 mignon de quelques savants am\u00e9ricains. Rien ne les enchante autant que de tirer, d&#8217;une longue s\u00e9rie de calculs, des conclusions \u00e9bouriffantes qui font se h\u00e9risser le commun des mortels..<\/em>.&#8221;. Et voil\u00e0 William Henry, qui, dans de simples jeux d&#8217;ombre et de lumi\u00e8re, se met \u00e0 voir des nuages et des \u00e9tendues neigeuses. Dessin Christine Sasiad<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00c9tait-il encore sous le charme de la l\u00e9gende <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/2022\/07\/04\/quand-les-hommes-chauves-souris-peuplaient-la-lune\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">des hommes chauve-souris<\/a> colport\u00e9e par Richard Adams Locke quelques d\u00e9cennies plus t\u00f4t ? Toujours est-il qu&#8217;il alla jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 interpr\u00e9ter &#8220;l&#8217;apparition&#8221; de taches sombres comme d&#8217;immenses fourmili\u00e8res. Et \u00e0 ceux qui contestaient cette hypoth\u00e8se, il r\u00e9pondait qu&#8217;on obtenait les m\u00eames r\u00e9sultats avec des nuages de sauterelles !<\/p>\n<p>Aujourd&#8217;hui, on pr\u00e9f\u00e8re se souvenir de W. H.
