Elle est \u00e9quip\u00e9e de deux coronographes LASCO (<em>Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph<\/em>) destin\u00e9s \u00e0 \u00e9tudier la couronne solaire. Le principe du coronographe a \u00e9t\u00e9 mis au point dans les ann\u00e9es 1930 par l\u2019astronome fran\u00e7ais <a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/sciences\/personnalites\/astronomie-bernard-lyot-1053\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bernard Lyot<\/a>. Un cache central sert \u00e0 masquer le Soleil, trop lumineux, de fa\u00e7on \u00e0 pouvoir observer ce qui se passe autour. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 ce proc\u00e9d\u00e9, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/ESA_Multimedia\/Images\/2024\/03\/SOHO_reaches_5000_comets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SOHO a d\u00e9j\u00e0 d\u00e9couvert plus de 5.000 com\u00e8tes<\/a> ! D\u00e9couverte le 7 ao\u00fbt 2006 par l&#8217;astronome professionnel australien Robert H. McNauht, la com\u00e8te <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eso.org\/public\/switzerland-fr\/images\/mc_naught42\/?lang\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">C\/2006 P1<\/a> est consid\u00e9r\u00e9e comme l&#8217;une des plus brillantes depuis un si\u00e8cle.
