Portrait de Koichi Itagaki, l&#8217;astronome amateur qui traque les supernovae.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5>Un amateur, trois observatoires :<\/h5>\n<p>C&#8217;est devenu un rituel depuis une quinzaine d&#8217;ann\u00e9es qu&#8217;il est en retraite. Chaque soir, apr\u00e8s avoir soup\u00e9 avec sa femme, Koichi Itagaki se rend dans son &#8220;quartier g\u00e9n\u00e9ral&#8221;. C&#8217;est une confortable cabane entour\u00e9e de coupoles situ\u00e9e dans les collines de Yamagata, \u00e0 300 kilom\u00e8tres au Nord de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/planete\/actualites\/geographie-dossier-japon-tokyo-okinawa-50290\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tokyo<\/a>. Itagaki<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Des instruments r\u00e9partis sur trois sites au Japon pour \u00eatre certain d&#8217;avoir toujours un coin de ciel d\u00e9gag\u00e9. Une fois install\u00e9, l&#8217;astronome amateur d\u00e9marre une \u00e9ni\u00e8me s\u00e9ance de chasse aux <a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/sciences\/definitions\/univers-supernova-60\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">supernovae<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h5>Soir\u00e9e presque ordinaire \u00e0 Yamagata :<\/h5>\n<p>Chaque nuit claire, ce sont pr\u00e8s d&#8217;un millier de galaxies qui sont automatiquement photographi\u00e9es, \u00e0 la recherche de nouvelles explosions stellaires. Cette nuit de printemps 2023, le ciel finit par se couvrir sur le Japon. Koichi Itagaki rentre chez nuit, non sans avoir pris soin de laisser les instruments en mode automatique, ce qui leur permet de reprendre leur programme d&#8217;observation en cas d&#8217;\u00e9claircie. C&#8217;est la plus proche supernova observ\u00e9e depuis une d\u00e9cennie et la 172e d\u00e9couverte de Koichi Itagaki !<\/p>\n<h5>Passion de jeunesse\u00a0:<\/h5>\n<p>\u00ab <em>Je ne suis pas astronome, mon passe-temps consiste juste \u00e0 chercher de nouveaux corps c\u00e9lestes<\/em> \u00bb. C&#8217;est ainsi que Koichi Itagaki r\u00e9sume modestement sa passion depuis six d\u00e9cennies. Tout a commenc\u00e9 en 1963 : alors au lyc\u00e9e, il assemble un petit t\u00e9lescope avec lequel il observe la <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/2023\/03\/15\/cyril-mayaud-le-photographe-qui-joue-avec-la-lune\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lune<\/a>. Avec ses premiers salaires (il a rejoint l&#8217;entreprise familiale de confiseries, Itagaki Peanuts), il s&#8217;ach\u00e8te un <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/2023\/01\/11\/peut-on-choisir-son-premier-telescope-sans-se-tromper\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">t\u00e9lescope<\/a> de 15 centim\u00e8tres de diam\u00e8tre et d\u00e9niche trois ans plus tard une com\u00e8te. Devanc\u00e9 par d&#8217;autres d\u00e9couvreurs, la com\u00e8te C\/1968 H1 Tago-Honda-Yamamoto ne portera jamais son nom.<\/p>\n<h5>Des com\u00e8tes aux supernovae\u00a0:<\/h5>\n<p>Devenu patron de l&#8217;entreprise familiale, Koichi va investir dans l&#8217;astronomie une grande partie de ses revenus et se consacrer \u00e0 la recherche de com\u00e8tes pendant trois d\u00e9cennies. Mais la mise en service de t\u00e9lescopes professionnels pour traquer les ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes g\u00e9ocroiseurs \u00e0 partir de 1998 ne lui laisse pas beaucoup d&#8217;espoir d&#8217;en d\u00e9couvrir. Il d\u00e9cide alors de rechercher les supernovae. Pour \u00e9chapper aux lumi\u00e8res de Yamagata, il loue un terrain dans les collines au-dessus de la ville et, au fil des ann\u00e9es y installe ses t\u00e9lescopes sous diff\u00e9rentes coupoles. C&#8217;est ainsi qu&#8217;il rep\u00e8re trois nouveaux ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes en 2004 : (117350) Saburo, (134069) Miyo et (189261) Hiroo. Itagaki<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>C&#8217;est \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque qu&#8217;il confie l&#8217;entreprise familiale \u00e0 ses fils pour se consacrer enti\u00e8rement \u00e0 sa passion. Son deuxi\u00e8me observatoire voit le jour en 2015 \u00e0 Okayama, un autre trois ans plus tard sur l&#8217;\u00eele de Shikoku. Un r\u00e9seau de t\u00e9lescopes sans doute unique dans le monde de l&#8217;astronomie amateur ! Avec au final un record de 172 d\u00e9couvertes, d\u00e9pass\u00e9 uniquement par les 360 supernovae de l&#8217;am\u00e9ricain Tim Puckett. Mais ce dernier est aid\u00e9 pour le d\u00e9pouillement de ses clich\u00e9s par un r\u00e9seau mondial de b\u00e9n\u00e9voles. Koichi Itagaki, en revanche, travaille seul, et bien qu&#8217;il soit autodidacte, il a d\u00e9j\u00e0 co-sign\u00e9 une vingtaine d&#8217;articles scientifiques.<\/p>\n<h5>Pr\u00e9cieuses archives\u00a0:<\/h5>\n<p>Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la pers\u00e9v\u00e9rance de Koichi Itagaki, SN 2023ixf est probablement la supernova qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9tect\u00e9e dans le plus court laps de temps apr\u00e8s son explosion. Mais le travail de b\u00e9n\u00e9dictin men\u00e9 par l&#8217;astronome amateur japonais depuis deux d\u00e9cennies pourrait peut-\u00eatre avoir une autre cons\u00e9quence heureuse. Ses d\u00e9couvertes pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes sugg\u00e8rent qu&#8217;il pourrait \u00eatre possible de voir des signes d&#8217;agitation sur une \u00e9toile massive avant m\u00eame qu&#8217;elle n&#8217;explose. En 2004, il a rep\u00e9r\u00e9 un point brillant dans une galaxie spirale \u00e0 77 millions d&#8217;ann\u00e9es-lumi\u00e8re de la Terre. Aucun professionnel n&#8217;a v\u00e9rifi\u00e9 ce flash qui a dur\u00e9 une dizaine de jours. Mais deux ans plus tard, Koichi Itagaki a d\u00e9couvert \u00e0 cet emplacement la supernova <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/astro-ph\/0612711\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SN 2006jc<\/a>. Itagaki<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On pensait auparavant que les \u00e9toiles \u00e9taient silencieuses avant de devenir des supernovae, les observations de Koichi Itagaki semblent prouver le contraire.<\/p>\n<p>Bien qu&#8217;il soit d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e2g\u00e9, Koichi Itagaki ne voit aucune raison de modifier ses habitudes. Il est d\u00e9termin\u00e9 \u00e0 attraper une supernova dans la<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/2022\/10\/09\/spectacle-cosmique-la-galaxie-dandromede-depuis-les-cevennes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> galaxie voisine d&#8217;Androm\u00e8de<\/a>.
