Elle se situe dans C\u00e9ph\u00e9e, une constellation circumpolaire de l&#8217;h\u00e9misph\u00e8re Nord. Cette NP, qui fut d\u00e9couverte en 1788 par <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/2014\/05\/12\/telescope-william-herschel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">William Herschel<\/a>, est aussi le second objet du catalogue Caldwell publi\u00e9 en 1995 par <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/2018\/12\/09\/patrick-moore-le-gentleman-de-lastronomie-britannique\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Patrick Moore<\/a>, l&#8217;ann\u00e9e m\u00eame o\u00f9 NGC 40 fut \u00e9tudi\u00e9e par le t\u00e9lescope spatial Hubble (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/feature\/goddard\/caldwell-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ici<\/a>). Mais pour les astronomes po\u00e8tes, elle est d&#8217;abord la n\u00e9buleuse du N\u0153ud papillon. Sa <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/2017\/05\/06\/quest-lechelle-magnitudes-astronomie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">magnitude<\/a> est de l&#8217;ordre de 12 pour une taille voisine de 40 secondes d&#8217;arc. Environ 1.000 ann\u00e9es-lumi\u00e8re derri\u00e8re NGC 40, se trouve le vestige d&#8217;une supernova, <a href=\"http:\/\/tevcat.uchicago.edu\/?mode=1;id=227\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CTA 1<\/a>. Beaucoup plus faibles, ces filaments de gaz n\u00e9cessitent de tr\u00e8s longs temps de poses. Lentement, le gaz de la n\u00e9buleuse se dilue compl\u00e8tement dans l\u2019espace. Notez au passage que les n\u00e9buleuses plan\u00e9taires n\u2019ont rien en commun avec les <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/2023\/05\/17\/pourquoi-certaines-planetes-font-elles-demi-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plan\u00e8tes<\/a>.
