Dans l&#8217;Antiquit\u00e9, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/2020\/11\/23\/paysages-lunaires-a-explorer-12-hipparque-le-cratere-de-tintin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hipparque<\/a> utilisait d\u00e9j\u00e0 la trigonom\u00e9trie pour estimer les tailles et distances du <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/2021\/09\/06\/le-soleil-se-reveille-les-taches-se-multiplient-a-sa-surface\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Soleil<\/a> et de la <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/2021\/11\/19\/les-terriens-ont-admire-leclipse-de-lune-du-19-novembre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lune<\/a>. Puis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/sciences\/personnalites\/astronomie-johannes-kepler-236\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kepler<\/a> s&#8217;appuya sur la g\u00e9om\u00e9trie pour d\u00e9crire le mouvement des plan\u00e8tes. Avec <a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/sciences\/personnalites\/matiere-isaac-newton-213\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Newton<\/a>, l&#8217;apparition du calcul (diff\u00e9rentiel et int\u00e9gral) permit de formuler les lois de la gravitation universelle. Ces puissants outils \u00e9taient donc \u00e0 la disposition des astronomes-math\u00e9maticiens du XIXe si\u00e8cle.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u00c9pisode 5 - Urbain Le Verrier\" width=\"474\" height=\"267\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OSCVYOOCs5o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Le plus dou\u00e9 d&#8217;entre eux \u00e9tait Urbain Le Verrier (1811-1877). Redout\u00e9 pour son tr\u00e8s mauvais caract\u00e8re, il \u00e9tait cependant reconnu comme un grand sp\u00e9cialiste de la m\u00e9canique c\u00e9leste.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h5>Plan\u00e8te insaisissable :<\/h5>\n<p>En 1846, Le Verrier se penche sur les anomalies que les astronomes observent dans le d\u00e9placement d&#8217;<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/2014\/11\/20\/tempetes-geantes-sur-uranus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Uranus<\/a>. Ses calculs lui permettent de pr\u00e9dire l&#8217;existence et la position d&#8217;une nouvelle plan\u00e8te. <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/2016\/06\/16\/voyager-2-immortalisait-neptune-triton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Neptune<\/a> est ainsi d\u00e9couverte par l&#8217;astronome prussien Johann Gottfried Galle le 23 septembre 1846. Il se trouve que <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/2020\/05\/22\/une-danseuse-aux-cotes-des-planetes-venus-et-mercure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mercure<\/a> conna\u00eet aussi des perturbations dans son mouvement. Le Verrier sugg\u00e8re alors la pr\u00e9sence d&#8217;une plan\u00e8te qui circulerait entre le Soleil et Mercure. Pendant les d\u00e9cennies qui suivent, une vingtaine de rapports d&#8217;observation mentionnent la pr\u00e9sence d&#8217;un petit point noir devant le Soleil. Taches solaires ou artefact ? Aucune photographie r\u00e9alis\u00e9e au cours des \u00e9clipses totales de Soleil ne vient confirmer l&#8217;existence d&#8217;un astre aux abords de notre \u00e9toile. En 1916, l&#8217;incertitude prend fin : la th\u00e9orie de la <a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/sciences\/definitions\/physique-relativite-generale-3572\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Relativit\u00e9 G\u00e9n\u00e9rale<\/a> permet enfin d&#8217;expliquer parfaitement les irr\u00e9gularit\u00e9s de Mercure.
