La rupture d&#8217;un second c\u00e2ble s&#8217;est produite il y a quelques jours. Elle fait suite \u00e0 un incident \u00e9quivalent le 10 ao\u00fbt (lire ci-dessous la publication du 12 ao\u00fbt). Le risque est d\u00e9sormais trop grand de voir s&#8217;effondrer la plateforme d&#8217;instruments. D&#8217;une masse de 900 tonnes, elle est suspendue \u00e0 137 m\u00e8tres au-dessus de l&#8217;antenne principale. Apr\u00e8s avoir surv\u00e9cu 57 ans \u00e0 de nombreux ouragans et tremblements de terre, le radiot\u00e9lescope est devenu trop dangereux.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab<em>Cette d\u00e9cision n\u2019a pas \u00e9t\u00e9 facile \u00e0 prendre<\/em>\u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Sean Jones, directeur adjoint de la NSF, lors d\u2019une conf\u00e9rence de presse aujourd\u2019hui. \u00ab<em>Nous comprenons \u00e0 quel point Arecibo compte pour la communaut\u00e9 scientifique et pour Porto Rico<\/em>.\u00bb<\/p>\n<h5>Publication du 12 ao\u00fbt 2020 :<\/h5>\n<p><strong>La rupture d&#8217;un c\u00e2ble soutenant une plateforme a fortement endommag\u00e9 l&#8217;antenne principale du radiot\u00e9lescope d&#8217;Arecibo situ\u00e9 \u00e0 Porto Rico.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5>Un radiot\u00e9lescope g\u00e9ant :<\/h5>\n<p>C&#8217;\u00e9tait jusqu&#8217;en 2016 la plus grande antenne de radiot\u00e9lescope du monde. Inaugur\u00e9 en 1963 sur l&#8217;\u00eele de Porto Rico, le radiot\u00e9lescope d&#8217;Arecibo est constitu\u00e9 d&#8217;une antenne principale de 305 m\u00e8tres de diam\u00e8tre. Cette antenne sph\u00e9rique fixe install\u00e9e dans une cuvette naturelle est compos\u00e9e de 38.778 plaques d&#8217;aluminium perfor\u00e9es. Ces panneaux mesurant environ 1 m sur 2 sont support\u00e9s par un imposant grillage.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/08\/arecibo2.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[12358]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-12360\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/08\/arecibo2-450x253.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/08\/arecibo2-450x253.jpg 450w, https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/08\/arecibo2-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/08\/arecibo2-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/08\/arecibo2.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Les ondes \u00e9lectromagn\u00e9tiques collect\u00e9es sont focalis\u00e9es sur un r\u00e9cepteur de 900 tonnes. Ce dernier, situ\u00e9 \u00e0 150 m\u00e8tres au-dessus de l&#8217;antenne principale, est maintenu par 18 c\u00e2bles en acier. Comme l&#8217;antenne principale est fixe, c&#8217;est le r\u00e9cepteur qui se d\u00e9place.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h5>Nouvel accident :<\/h5>\n<p>C&#8217;est un des c\u00e2bles soutenant le r\u00e9cepteur qui s&#8217;est bris\u00e9 le 10 ao\u00fbt. Chutant 150 m\u00e8tres plus bas, il a d\u00e9chir\u00e9 la surface collectrice de l&#8217;antenne principale sur une longueur de 30 m\u00e8tres. Le radiot\u00e9lescope \u00e9tait encore en travaux suite aux d\u00e9g\u00e2ts occasionn\u00e9s par l&#8217;ouragan <em>Maria<\/em> en septembre 2017. Les experts sur place cherchent pour le moment \u00e0 assurer la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 du personnel.
