L&#8217;ast\u00e9ro\u00efde qui a creus\u00e9 ce crat\u00e8re de 300 km de diam\u00e8tre devait avoir une taille comprise entre 10 et 15 km. L&#8217;impact s&#8217;est produit il y a un peu plus de 2 milliards d&#8217;ann\u00e9es ce qui explique que le crat\u00e8re soit tr\u00e8s \u00e9rod\u00e9. En raison de son int\u00e9r\u00eat scientifique le site est inscrit sur la liste du <a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/fr\/list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">patrimoine mondial de l&#8217;UNESCO<\/a>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h5>Crat\u00e8res vieux et us\u00e9s :<\/h5>\n<p>Il reste encore sur Terre de telles structures g\u00e9ologiques malgr\u00e9 l&#8217;action de l&#8217;\u00e9rosion et de la <a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/planete\/definitions\/geologie-tectonique-plaques-970\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tectonique des plaques<\/a>. Seuls les plus jeunes crat\u00e8res d&#8217;impacts sont les mieux conserv\u00e9s. C&#8217;est le cas par exemple du crat\u00e8re des <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/2016\/05\/12\/zoom-cratere-impact-pingualuit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pingualuit<\/a> au Nunavik, \u00e0 l\u2019extr\u00e9mit\u00e9 nord du Qu\u00e9bec, dont la formation remonte \u00e0 seulement 1,4 million d&#8217;ann\u00e9es. Les impacts les plus violents, ceux provoqu\u00e9s par des ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes de quelques kilom\u00e8tres, sont beaucoup plus \u00e2g\u00e9s et donc leur signature moins visible (voir par exemple le crat\u00e8re de <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/2018\/09\/11\/astrobleme-canadien-manicouagan-vu-de-espace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Manicouagan<\/a> ou celui de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/planete\/videos\/cratere-chicxulub-temoin-extinction-dinosaures-2531\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chicxulub<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Chicxulub impact visualization\" width=\"474\" height=\"356\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5qJPTjMnwNk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Cette distribution dans le temps (les gros impacts sont les plus anciens, les plus petits les plus r\u00e9cents) s&#8217;explique logiquement. Dans la jeunesse du Syst\u00e8me solaire ce sont les plus gros <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/2014\/11\/24\/les-grosses-meteorites-inquietent-les-scientifiques\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes<\/a> qui se sont agglom\u00e9r\u00e9s en premier et les collisions \u00e9taient particuli\u00e8rement violentes. Au fil du temps il ne restait plus que des corps de moins en moins gros et les plus petits ont heurt\u00e9 la Terre en dernier. Ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne, qui se retrouve sur tous les autres corps du Syst\u00e8me solaire, s&#8217;observe particuli\u00e8rement bien sur la <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/2019\/04\/22\/la-sonde-lro-nous-offre-la-lune-en-tres-haute-resolution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lune<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h5>\u00c0 savoir :<\/h5>\n<p>L&#8217;astrobl\u00e8me de Vredefort pourrait peut-\u00eatre perdre son statut de plus grand crat\u00e8re d&#8217;impact terrestre.
