Elles furent creus\u00e9es entre les IVe et XIVe si\u00e8cles. Elles se situent \u00e0 environ 25 kilom\u00e8tres au sud-est de Dunhuang dans la province du Gansu. Il s&#8217;agit de sanctuaires bouddhistes dans lesquels on priait sans doute pour le succ\u00e8s de son voyage. En 1900 un pr\u00eatre s&#8217;y installa et d\u00e9cida de les remettre en \u00e9tat. Parmi les manuscrits se trouvait une magnifique carte c\u00e9leste.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h5>Le ciel bor\u00e9al sur un rouleau :<\/h5>\n<p>En 1907 l&#8217;arch\u00e9ologue Marc Aurel Stein rapporta la carte et plus de 7.000 autres manuscrits au <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">British Museum<\/a> de Londres. Ce document montre tout le ciel visible de Chine. Les \u00e9toiles sont habilement dessin\u00e9es \u00e0 la main sur du papier de m\u00fbrier avec des encres rouges et noires. Le support est un fin rouleau de papier long de quatre m\u00e8tres. R\u00e9alis\u00e9 \u00e0 la fin du VIIe si\u00e8cle, il s&#8217;agit du plus ancien atlas c\u00e9leste existant au monde. Il est divis\u00e9 en deux parties. La premi\u00e8re montre 26 dessins de nuages \u200b\u200bde formes diff\u00e9rentes. L&#8217;autre partie se compose de 12 cartes c\u00e9lestes (par section de 30\u00b0) ainsi qu&#8217;une carte du ciel circumpolaire. Les positions des \u00e9toiles correspondent au ciel observ\u00e9 \u00e0 une latitude de 34 \u00b0 Nord. Les mesures ont peut-\u00eatre \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9es depuis l&#8217;observatoire imp\u00e9rial de\u00a0 Xi&#8217;an (anciennement Chang&#8217;an).<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&quot;La  Carte c\u00e9leste de Dunhuang&quot;\" width=\"474\" height=\"356\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4bcxbDydukM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5>Un atlas tr\u00e8s pr\u00e9cis :<\/h5>\n<p>Sur l&#8217;atlas on recense 1.339 \u00e9toiles r\u00e9parties en 257 groupes (appel\u00e9s ast\u00e9rismes). Deux correspondent aux constellations de la <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/2015\/10\/07\/la-grande-ourse-et-la-cabotte-sous-la-lune\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grande Ourse<\/a> et d&#8217;<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/2019\/09\/11\/la-constellation-dorion-un-joyau-a-decouvrir-en-fin-de-nuit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Orion<\/a>. On note la pr\u00e9sence de faibles \u00e9toiles difficiles \u00e0 voir \u00e0 l&#8217;\u0153il nu. L&#8217;astronome <a href=\"http:\/\/bonnetbidaud.free.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jean-Marc Bonnet-Bidaud<\/a> a constat\u00e9 que la position des astres les plus brillants est \u00e9tonnamment pr\u00e9cise (\u00e0 quelques degr\u00e9s pr\u00e8s). En collaboration avec S. Whitfield et F. Praderie, il a pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 le r\u00e9sultat de son \u00e9tude sur <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/0906.3034\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">arXiv<\/a>. Les trois chercheurs ont remarqu\u00e9 aussi que les \u00e9toiles de l&#8217;atlas avaient \u00e9t\u00e9 dessin\u00e9es en utilisant des m\u00e9thodes de projection encore utilis\u00e9es aujourd&#8217;hui en cartographie.<\/p>\n<h5>Une n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 politique :<\/h5>\n<p>Sur l&#8217;atlas c\u00e9leste de Dunhuang, le texte accompagnant chaque carte se compose du nom de la r\u00e9gion du ciel, des pr\u00e9dictions astrologiques qui lui sont associ\u00e9es et de la liste des \u00e9tats de l&#8217;empire chinois cens\u00e9s \u00eatre concern\u00e9s par ces pr\u00e9dictions. Cet atlas restera plusieurs si\u00e8cles l&#8217;ouvrage le plus d\u00e9taill\u00e9 au sujet du ciel bor\u00e9al. Ceci s&#8217;explique par le r\u00f4le de l&#8217;astronomie, science imp\u00e9riale, dans la Chine ancienne. Les empereurs chinois cherchaient des indices dans le ciel pour prendre les bonnes d\u00e9cisions politiques et strat\u00e9giques.
