Il se situe au Chili, \u00e0 plus de 5.000 m\u00e8tres d\u2019altitude. R\u00e9alis\u00e9 par l\u2019<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eso.org\/public\/france\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ESO<\/a>, il se compose de 66 antennes de 12 et 7 m de diam\u00e8tre. Elles se d\u00e9ploient sur 16 km de fa\u00e7on \u00e0 simuler un <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/2015\/05\/18\/le-grand-radiotelescope-de-nancay-fete-ses-50-ans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">radiot\u00e9lescope<\/a> g\u00e9ant. Hor\u00e1lek\/ESO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>L\u2019ensemble est situ\u00e9 dans le <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/2017\/04\/24\/pluie-de-lyrides-dessus-desert-datacama\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">d\u00e9sert d\u2019Atacama<\/a>, pr\u00e8s de la ville chilienne de San Pedro de Atacama, sur le plateau de Chajnantor.<!--more--><span id=\"more-8119\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h5>\u00c0 la recherche des protoplan\u00e8tes :<\/h5>\n<p>C\u2019est l\u2019endroit id\u00e9al pour installer un interf\u00e9rom\u00e8tre comme ALMA. \u00c0 5.000 m d\u2019altitude, il se trouve au-dessus de 50 % de l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re terrestre. Voil\u00e0 un bon moyen pour s\u2019affranchir d\u2019une grande quantit\u00e9 de vapeur d\u2019eau (10 \u00e0 1.000 fois plus faible \u00e0 cette altitude qu\u2019au niveau de la mer). Ainsi ALMA peut capter les \u00e9missions radio provenant des disques de gaz et de poussi\u00e8re en rotation autour de jeunes \u00e9toiles. Komugi (NAOJ)\/ESO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span id=\"more-2874\"><\/span>Ce site astronomique a \u00e9t\u00e9 inaugur\u00e9 en mars 2013 apr\u00e8s plus de 10 ans de travaux. L&#8217;ESO y a consacr\u00e9 un budget de 1,4 milliard de dollars. C&#8217;est \u00e0 ce jour le projet astronomique le plus ambitieux du monde. ALMA devrait permettre d\u2019atteindre une r\u00e9solution d\u2019environ 0,005 seconde d\u2019arc. C&#8217;est la constellation dans laquelle est localis\u00e9 le p\u00f4le sud c\u00e9leste.
