Morabito en 1979 \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 des \u00e9crans montrant un panache volcanique sur Io. \u00a9 NASA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Le 9 mars 1979, alors qu&#8217;elle analysait l&#8217;une des images transmises par la sonde <a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/sciences\/actualites\/exploration-spatiale-voyager-1-nasa-rallume-propulseurs-eteints-depuis-37-ans-2712\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Voyager 1<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/lindamorabito.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Linda Morabito<\/a>, membre du <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Jet Propulsion Laboratory<\/em><\/a>, d\u00e9tecta un nuage sur Io : elle venait de d\u00e9couvrir le premier exemple de volcanisme actif en dehors de la Terre.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h5>Volcanisme permanent :<\/h5>\n<p>D\u00e9j\u00e0 malmen\u00e9 par la proximit\u00e9 de Jupiter, Io est \u00e9galement tiraill\u00e9 par les passages des lunes Europe et Ganym\u00e8de. Les cons\u00e9quences sont spectaculaires : la surface du satellite peut se soulever d&#8217;une centaine de m\u00e8tres. C&#8217;est \u00e9norme, en comparaison des 18 m\u00e8tres d&#8217;amplitude maximale des mar\u00e9es terrestres (dans le cas de notre plan\u00e8te cette d\u00e9formation concerne une masse liquide, pas une cro\u00fbte solide !). D&#8217;autre part, l&#8217;orbite du satellite le contraint \u00e0 couper les lignes du champ magn\u00e9tique de la plan\u00e8te g\u00e9ante, le transformant en puissant g\u00e9n\u00e9rateur \u00e9lectrique. La lave en fusion renouvelle constamment la surface, donnant naissance \u00e0 des \u00e9ruptions qui remplissent tous les crat\u00e8res d&#8217;impact (voir cette r\u00e9cente \u00e9ruption enregistr\u00e9e par la <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/feldmann\/2025\/02\/01\/juno-saisit-la-plus-puissante-eruption-volcanique-de-io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sonde Juno<\/a>). La composition de cette lave est encore incertaine mais les th\u00e9ories sugg\u00e8rent qu\u2019il s\u2019agit principalement de soufre fondu et de ses compos\u00e9s (ce qui expliquerait la coloration du sol) ou de la roche silicat\u00e9e (qui rendrait mieux compte des temp\u00e9ratures mesur\u00e9es).
