We can see blackboards covered by diagrams and equations supposed to be a possible way to the \u00ab\u00a0ultimate equation\u00a0\u00bb of a so-called \u00ab\u00a0Theory Of Everything\u00a0\u00bb. If discovered by the scientists, it would eventually help to solve all the problems of humanity. I will not discuss the naivety of such a view, but briefly discuss the question\u00a0whether the equations on the screen have any meaning.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1576\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1576\" style=\"width: 428px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1576\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/e-luminet\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2016\/03\/smbrk.jpg\" alt=\"The complete unification of the four fundamental interactions can be achieved only at very high energy, conditions which prevailed in the very early universe during the so-called \u00ab Planck era \u00bb.\" width=\"428\" height=\"362\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1576\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The complete unification of the four fundamental interactions can be achieved only at very high energy, conditions which prevailed in the very early universe during the so-called \u00ab Planck era \u00bb.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">At first sight we can doubt because the unification of general relativity and quantum mechanics remains unsolved \u2013 even if various approaches, such as the loop quantum gravity<a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[1]<\/a>, the string theory<a href=\"#_edn2\" name=\"_ednref2\">[2]<\/a> (of which the Randall-Sundrum model referred above is a very particular solution) or the non-commutative geometry<a href=\"#_edn3\" name=\"_ednref3\">[3]<\/a>, are intensively explored by theoretical physicists all around the world.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Clearly the <em>Interstellar<\/em> filmmakers have bet on the most \u00ab\u00a0fashionable\u00a0\u00bb attempt for unifying all fundamental interactions\u00a0: string theory. String theory stipulates that the fundamental constituents of matter are not point-like particles but open or closed strings on the scale of the Planck length (10<sup>-33<\/sup> cm), whose vibrational modes define particle properties. In this framework, space-time becomes a derived concept, which only makes sense at a scale larger than that of the strings. String theory, which comes in five different varieties, aroused such keen interest that in the 1990\u2019s, certain theorists believed it was capable of giving a \u00ab\u00a0Theory Of Everything\u00a0\u00bb. However, the mathematical difficulties involved are formidable, and it is not certain that they will be resolved in the future<a href=\"#_edn4\" name=\"_ednref4\">[4]<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1577\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1577\" style=\"width: 399px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1577\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/e-luminet\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2016\/03\/ThCordes.jpg\" alt=\"In string theory and its putative extension called M-theory, closed strings (loops) describe gravity and move in the nine or ten additional dimensions of the fundamental space (the &quot;Bulk&quot; or the &quot;Matrix&quot;). On the contrary, open strings which describe the other particles and interactions have extremities moving only on a \u00ab brane \u00bb (for instance our 4D spacetime).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The five different string theories have given birth to a larger supposed theory, of which the string theories would only be limits\u00a0: not only one-dimensional lines could vibrate, but also two-dimensional surfaces and other spaces of higher dimension, such as membranes &#8211; from whence the name M-theory given to this hypothesis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Returning to the ultimate equation briefly seen in <em>Interstellar<\/em> on Murph\u2019s blackboard, something looking like<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1578\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/e-luminet\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2016\/03\/equationfinale.jpg\" alt=\"equationfinale\" width=\"406\" height=\"54\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">as far as I can remember, physicists who know a little bit of string theory will recognize the so-called effective action of M-theory in the lowest approximation of its perturbative development. In simpler terms, it gives a hint of what would like the \u00ab\u00a0ultimate equation\u00a0\u00bb of physics if M-theory was the correct framework. It is probably not, but I imagine that Kip Thorne made a <em>clin d\u2019\u0153il<\/em> to string theorists to mean that, in his opinion, a future Theory of Everything will probably be similar to M-theory. I do not share this point of view, but it is rather unexpected to find such a sophisticated message in a Hollywood movie.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1579\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/e-luminet\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2016\/03\/Hypercube-450x427-450x427.jpg\" alt=\"Hypercube-450x427\" width=\"224\" height=\"212\" \/>The g<sub>5<\/sub> and d<sup>5<\/sup>x terms mean that we deal with a theory in 5 dimensions\u00a0: 1 for time and 4 for space, like in the Randall-Sundrum case. In a 4-dimensional space without curvature, the analog of the cube is called an hypercube or a tesseract. The tesseract is to the cube as the cube is to the square. Just as the surface of the cube consists of 6 square faces, the hypersurface of the tesseract consists of 8 cubical cells, giving a visual effect which has been excitingly represented in <em>Interstellar<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">But for my part, from an artistic point of view, I am much more moved by the <em>Corpus Hypercubus<\/em> painted in 1954 by Salvador Dali. Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify\">Denouement<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"small-caps\">Released<\/span> some months before <em>Interstellar<\/em>, the science fiction thriller <em>Gravity<\/em> was lauded for its impressive depictions of weightlessness and the hostile nature of space<span style=\"color: #339966\">[5]<\/span>.\u00a0Most of the science shown in <em>Gravity<\/em> could be understood in the framework of Newtonian theory, published more than 400 years ago. In sharp contrast, understanding most of the phenomena depicted in <em>Interstellar<\/em> requires some understanding of general relativity, along with quantum mechanics, and even a little bit of string theory. The result is an intriguing and noteworthy film, one that attempts to combine a great story and accurate science.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1580\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1580\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1580\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.futura-sciences.com\/e-luminet\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2016\/03\/gravity-450x253-450x253.jpg\" alt=\"A spectacular scene of the film &quot;Gravity&quot;\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1580\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A spectacular scene of the film &#8220;Gravity&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">But <em>Interstellar<\/em> is a work of science fiction. Artistic license and scientific extrapolation are part of the game.
