Il mesure pr\u00e8s de 50\u00a0km de long du nord au sud, pr\u00e8s de 40\u00a0km de large d&#8217;est en ouest et plus de 3300\u00a0m de haut mais son altitude peut varier d\u2019une \u00e9ruption \u00e0 l\u2019autre. Bardintzeff).<\/p>\n<p>Les Latins en avaient fait le domaine du dieu Vulcain, qui, selon la mythologie, travaillait dans des forges souterraines. Emp\u00e9docle, philosophe grec du V<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle av. J.-C., vivant \u00e0 Agrigente en Sicile, se passionna pour son observation et une tentative de compr\u00e9hension. Selon la l\u00e9gende, il tomba (ou se pr\u00e9cipita?) dans un des crat\u00e8res de l&#8217;Etna, qui ne rejeta qu&#8217;une de ses sandales.<\/p>\n<p>L&#8217;Etna est un \u00e9norme \u00e9difice, avec plusieurs crat\u00e8res sommitaux principaux (5 actuellement\u00a0: la Voragine, la Bocca Nuova, le crat\u00e8re nord-est, le crat\u00e8re sud-est et le nouveau crat\u00e8re sud-est) et des flancs constell\u00e9s de 250 petits c\u00f4nes, tels les Monti Rossi (apparus en 1669) et les Monti Silvestri (1892). Bardintzeff).<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019activit\u00e9 de l\u2019Etna a d\u00e9but\u00e9 il y a 300 000 ans environ, par un volcanisme sous-marin, comme en t\u00e9moignent les laves en coussins (\u00ab pillow lavas \u00bb) visibles sur la c\u00f4te pr\u00e8s d&#8217;Aci Castello. Une de ses \u00e9ruptions dura dix ans, de 1614 \u00e0 1624 ! Lors de l&#8217;\u00e9ruption majeure de mars \u00e0 juillet 1669, une fissure importante de 9 km de long puis d&#8217;autres ont vomi des coul\u00e9es de lave qui ont atteint la ville de Catane et se sont \u00e9panch\u00e9es en mer. Bardintzeff).<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019ann\u00e9e 2013 a \u00e9t\u00e9 marqu\u00e9e par de nombreux paroxysmes de l\u2019Etna, le plus souvent \u00e0 partir du nouveau crat\u00e8re sud-est. Chaque paroxysme, qui dure plusieurs heures en moyenne, commence classiquement par des explosions stromboliennes (projection de bombes incandescentes) et se terminent par des fontaines de lave hautes de plusieurs centaines de m\u00e8tres et des petites coul\u00e9es de lave.
