Bardintzeff).<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Le contenu de l\u2019article\u00a0:<\/p>\n<p>L&#8217;\u00e9ruption du volcan de Feu au Guatemala est-elle comparable \u00e0 celle qui d\u00e9truisit Pomp\u00e9i ?<\/p>\n<p>Question 1. On compare l&#8217;\u00e9ruption du volcan de Feu au Guatemala \u00e0 celle du V\u00e9suve, lors de la destruction de Pomp\u00e9i. Pour quelles raisons ?<\/p>\n<p>Il s\u2019agit de deux volcans potentiellement explosifs, qui ont un pass\u00e9 (un passif), avec des \u00e9missions de nu\u00e9es ardentes (nuages br\u00fblants de gaz, cendre et blocs, d\u00e9valant les flancs du volcan), suivies de coul\u00e9es boueuses (lahars), faisant des victimes. Si les modalit\u00e9s se ressemblent, l\u2019amplitude de l\u2019\u00e9ruption du V\u00e9suve en 79 est bien sup\u00e9rieure \u00e0 celle du Fuego 2018. Dans le cas du V\u00e9suve, la colonne de cendres et de ponces est mont\u00e9e \u00e0 32 km de hauteur\u00a0! On parle d\u2019\u00e9ruption de type plinien (nom donn\u00e9 en l\u2019honneur de Pline l\u2019Ancien et de Pline le Jeune qui ont expertis\u00e9 cette \u00e9ruption). Des nu\u00e9es ardentes (type p\u00e9l\u00e9en) ont suivi. On estime que la population de Pomp\u00e9i \u00e9tait de 20\u00a0000 habitants environ\u00a0; beaucoup avaient fui. Il restait alors environ 2 000 personnes dans la ville, mortes dans la catastrophe. Au Fuego, la colonne \u00e9ruptive est mont\u00e9e \u00e0 6 km de hauteur. Les nu\u00e9es ardentes du Fuego devaient \u00eatre moins rapides que celles du V\u00e9suve\u00a0: on d\u00e9plore actuellement environ une centaine de morts et 200 disparus.<\/p>\n<p>Les deux volcans ne se ressemblent pas morphologiquement\u00a0: le Fuego est un c\u00f4ne qui culmine \u00e0 3 763 m (reposant sur un plateau de 1 000 m environ) alors que le V\u00e9suve est un volcan peu \u00e9lev\u00e9 (1\u00a0281 m), avec deux sommets suite \u00e0 l\u2019explosion de 79.<\/p>\n<p>Question 2. Et qu&#8217;est-ce qui distingue l&#8217;\u00e9ruption du volcan de Feu \u00e0 celle d&#8217;Hawaii, qui se d\u00e9roule aussi en ce moment ? L\u2019\u00e9ruption du Kilauea \u00e0 Hawaii est effusive, lavique, rouge. Il s\u2019agit de quantit\u00e9s impressionnantes de lave mais qui avancent doucement, \u00e0 quelques centaines de m\u00e8tres \u00e0 l\u2019heure, souvent bien moins\u00a0; c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire moins vite qu\u2019un humain qui marche. Les habitants ont donc le temps de partir. D\u2019ailleurs on ne d\u00e9plore aucun mort \u00e0 Hawaii depuis le d\u00e9but de l\u2019\u00e9ruption le 3 mai 2018 et c\u2019est tant mieux. Le Fuego au contraire produit des \u00e9ruptions explosives, grises, soudaines et rapides qui surprennent les habitants faisant de nombreux morts. Les deux volcans se situent dans des contextes g\u00e9odynamiques compl\u00e8tement diff\u00e9rents\u00a0: intraplaque (plaque Pacifique) pour le Kilauea \u00e0 Hawaii, en limite de plaques (subduction\u00a0: la plaque Coccos plonge sous la plaque Cara\u00efbe) pour le Fuego au Guatemala.<\/p>\n<p>Question 3. Pr\u00e8s de 100 personnes sont mortes dans l&#8217;\u00e9ruption du volcan de Feu. Ce type d&#8217;\u00e9ruption est-il le plus meurtrier\u00a0?<\/p>\n<p>Oui, les nu\u00e9es ardentes constituent un risque volcanique humain majeur par leur soudainet\u00e9, leur vitesse, leur aptitude \u00e0 remonter \u00e0 contre-pente. Des vitesses de 100 \u00e0 500 km\/h rendent toute fuite illusoire. Les temp\u00e9ratures, mortelles, atteignent 200 \u00e0 500 \u00b0C. Une seule r\u00e9ponse donc pour les volcanologues et les responsables\u00a0: une \u00e9vacuation pr\u00e9alable de la population menac\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>Question 4. Etant donn\u00e9 l&#8217;activit\u00e9 sismique du volcan de feu depuis le d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 2000, cette catastrophe \u00e9tait-elle pr\u00e9visible ?<\/p>\n<p>Le volcan Fuego est effectivement tr\u00e8s actif depuis plusieurs ann\u00e9es (depuis 2002). Mais il se manifestait surtout par des \u00e9ruptions sommitales et verticales avec des projections de cendres et de blocs \u00e0 plusieurs milliers de m\u00e8tres de hauteur (type vulcanien). Il a brusquement chang\u00e9 de logique pour \u00e9mettre des nu\u00e9es ardentes (type p\u00e9l\u00e9en) d\u00e9valant ses flancs et atteignant les villages en contrebas.
