Le triangle des Afars appara\u00eet comme une r\u00e9gion cl\u00e9 pour la compr\u00e9hension de la tectonique des plaques car trois structures g\u00e9ologiques majeures s&#8217;y rejoignent\u00a0: la mer Rouge, la dorsale de Carlsberg de l&#8217;oc\u00e9an Indien et le foss\u00e9 du rift est-africain. Notre camp de base est dress\u00e9 dans un d\u00e9sert de sel, \u00e0 moins 160 m\u00e8tres sous le niveau de la mer.<\/p>\n<p>Le th\u00e8me \u00ab\u00a0volcanologie\u00a0\u00bb se d\u00e9roule en deux temps. Il s\u2019agit d\u2019abord d\u2019\u00e9chantillonner les sources thermales de Dallol, qui battent tous les records physico-chimiques\u00a0: je mesure m\u00eame des pH \u00ab\u00a0n\u00e9gatifs\u00a0\u00bb de -0,20, \u00e0 cause des effets conjugu\u00e9s de l\u2019acidit\u00e9 extr\u00eame, de la temp\u00e9rature de 72 degr\u00e9s et des \u00e9normes concentrations en sels dissous. Ceux-ci sont responsables des couleurs du site, extraordinaires \u00e0 couper le souffle\u00a0: des verts aux jaunes, des ocres aux rouges. Nicolas se demande d\u2019ailleurs si la nature \u00ab\u00a0n\u2019en fait parfois pas un peu trop\u00a0\u00bb.
